A poor boarder inherits 30 million dollars from an American soldier whose life he saved during the Korean War. The stingy landlady instantly turns into a completely different person, women swarm around him, and charities ask him for donations. Gangsters come forward and try to kill him. But one day a letter arrives from the bank that says the 30 million dollars was a mistake. He faints.
월급쟁이 신세의 표본인 맹순진(구봉서)은 월급날이 되어도 밀린 빚을 갚느라 하숙비 낼 돈 조차 없다. 어느 날 맹순진이 6ㆍ25 전쟁 때 구해준 베이커 중령의 부인이 찾아온다. 베이커는 자신의 유산 중 200억 환을 맹순진에게 남겼는데, 조건은 남에게 절대 주지 말고 1년 동안 유쾌하게 즐기는 데만 사용하라는 것이다. 맹순진의 하숙집에는 정치가, 영화제작자, 거지, 과학자, 약장사 등 돈을 달라는 사람들로 줄을 서고, 사장이나 영업부장 등 주변사람들의 맹순진에 대한 태도도 달라진다. 맹순진은 이를 귀찮아할 뿐 대수롭지 않게 여기며 직장 동료 장(곽규석)과 돈을 쓰기 위해 돌아다니느라 고생하는데...
