Jun-Tae loved Jeong-Hee, whose father is a poor day laborer, but joined the Marine Corps, losing his dream with Jeong-Hee because of his parents' objection. After being discharged from the military service, he returns to find Jeong-Hee. Jun-Tae reminisces about his past with Jeong-Hu Yun-Ae, a bargirl, loves that Jun-Tae. Jun-Tae tries to forget Jeong-Hee, a wife of another man now. Yun-Ae and Jun-Tae promise their marriage, but Yun-Ae realizes the gap of the social status between them. Jun-Tae wishes her a happy life in her future and makes efforts for Wangsibri, his hometown.
가난한 막벌이꾼의 딸 정희를 사랑하던 준태는 부친 사망 이후 재산싸움으로 인한 가족의 분열로 스스로 재산을 포기하고 외국으로 떠난다. 귀국 후 준태는 정희를 찾아 왕십리로 돌아온다. 정희의 흔적을 찾는 그에게 호스테스 윤애의 슬픈 구애가 호소되고 다른 사람의 부인이 된 정희를 만난 준태는 그녀를 잊는다. 윤애는 준태와 결혼하기를 약속하나 그와의 신분격차를 인식하고 떠나버린다. 준태는 윤애의 앞날을 축복해 주고 고향인 왕십리를 위해 남기로 결심한다.
