A widow of an aristocratic family falls in love with a servant. After she gives birth to a baby fathered by the servant, her in-laws kick him and the baby out. As the years pass, the baby grows up to become a man and comes to see his mother. But she cannot acknowledge that he is his son because it is a rule of the society that widows must keep celibacy. She turns her back on her own son.
양반집 며느리(최은희)는 청상과부인 채 수절하려다 머슴(신영균)과 신분을 초월하여 사랑을 나눈다. 비 오는 어느 날 방앗간에서 두사람은 정을 통하고 며느리는 임신하여 출산하게 되지만, 머슴은 갓난 핏덩이를 안고 쫓겨난다. 먼 훗날 장성한 아들이 어머니를 찾아오지만, 그녀는 자식을 불러보지도 못하고 돌려보낸다. 과부는 수절하고 살아야 한다는 도덕관념 때문이었다. 이를 지켜보던 시할머니(한은진)가 견디다 못해 돌아가는 아들을 불러주며 쓰러진다.
