ไม่เผ็ดไม่กิน - in Thai it reads "Mai Phet Mai Gin," which translates to, "If It's Not Spicy, I'm Not Eating!"
You may have seen me wearing this t-shirt in many of my videos for the past few years - and as a spicy food lover, it's one of my favorite t-shirts...
... but along with just liking what the t-shirt says, there's a story behind "ไม่เผ็ดไม่กิน Mai Phet Mai Gin."
When I first came to Thailand I ate at the same street food stall everyday for months. While I would rotate between which dishes I would order, I would always order my meals extra spicy.
Soon, the lady who owned the restaurant wouldn't need me to tell her I wanted it spicy, but she would just yell to her chef, "if it's not spicy, he's not eating!"
So for instance I would order shrimp with holy basil (pad kra pao goong), and she would yell out, "pad kra pao goong, if it's not spicy, he's not eating!"
It was one of my first Thai food memories, and something I'll never forget.
