Five years ago, several English subject department heads determinedly reformed the curriculum planning, to promote a teaching policy of extensive reading and “speak before they write”.

Under the reform, the teachers abandon textbooks and collect suitable English books in the community and use them as their teaching materials. They aim to expand the vocabulary lists of the students through their extensive reading. Lower primary students will read over a hundred books per year, so as to enhance their senses of English language. Teachers will not teach grammar in the lower primary class, but through hearing and reading, students will naturally understand sentence structure and can avoid the boring pain of learning grammar.

After the input of reading, students are provided with opportunities to output. There will be a lot of discussion and sharing sessions, in which the large amount of oral practices can help students improve their language expression skills, thereby enabling them to write at ease in the future.
