Roger Federer Foundation Remains Committed to Malawi's Children, Thundu's First Day Care Center Opens. [23-August-2013] After 18 months of construction, the first day care center in Malawi's Thundu village recently opened its doors. Excitement and pride were apparent as the villagers and guests celebrated the opening of the district's first day care center and playground, with singing and dancing. Every day from 8am to 1pm, more than 60 children between the ages of three and six will be at the center, which will offer structured, age-appropriate instruction. They will have access to books, toys, and a playground, as well as a meal which will be provided every day. In a place where over 80% of the population has limited access to education and many small children suffer from chronic malnutrition, the child care center is a milestone in efforts to promote the development of Thundu's young children.

The Roger Federer Foundation is supporting this initiative to develop early-childhood education in Malawi. Together with local non-government organization ActionAid Malawi, the Foundation aims to provide sustained support for around 80 community-based childhood centers (CBCCs) over a 10-year period. The first objective is to improve access to these centers; the second is to increase their quality. This involves not only construction work but also measures such as providing training for staff, raising awareness and mobilization among parents, as well as improving management. All in all, it is hoped that more than 50,000 children will one day benefit from the foundation's commitment. "Education really matters for children," says Roger Federer. "It can never be taken away from them."
