As promised at the end of last week’s show, in part two of this week’s programme we’re going to be following up on the disappearance of five men connected to a bookshop in Causeway Bay. There are concerns that one of them was abducted directly from Hong Kong by mainland security forces. If that’s true, what does the “One Country Two Systems” concept mean today?
Cynics would say you could be forgiven for thinking the same thing after listening to Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying’s fourth Policy Address this week, much of which seemed to be aimed in a northerly direction as opposed to what’s happening down here. Beijing’s “One Belt One Road initiative got considerably more attention than any local issue, with the phrase turning up 48 times in his two-hour speech. Leung stayed away from thorny local political issues and some of his earlier promises were also not mentioned. At the local level, he focused on the economy, education and dishing out more funding than expected for innovation technologies.
Finally, we are turning away from local politics to mark the death this week of, musician, singer, actor, and cultural icon David Bowie. He celebrated his 69th birthday last Friday with the launch of his latest album “Blackstar”. Two days later it was announced that he had a lost an 18 month battle with cancer. In March 2004, Bowie gave his final concert in Hong Kong. We were there. And we’ll let the Starman play us out.
See you next week.
