In 1877, critic Walter Pater wrote: “All art constantly aspires towards the condition of music.” Mark Rothko famously said: “I became a painter because I wanted to raise painting to the level of poignancy of music and poetry.” From James McNeill Whistler’s “Nocturnes” to Mondrian's "Broadway Boogie Woogie" and the works of Wassily Kandinsky, many works of visual art are influenced by music. Swiss artist Paul Klee was a violin prodigy before he turned to painting. Long-time viola player Fan Yan may be following a similar path.
Born in Spain and raised in Paris and Bogota, Pablo Posada Pernikoff studied engineering and mathematics in Bogota and Montreal. Later, he studied design and fine art in Italy, before going to Japan, where he lived for nearly three decades. As part of this year’s Le French May, Sin Sin Fine Art's exhibition “Velocity” presents a series of works by Pernikoff in which he uses line to express motion, the passage of time, and the fluidity of life.
Every year, through an open invitation exercise, the Community Cultural Ambassador Scheme selects arts practitioners and groups to organise outreach activities that introduce performing arts to the public. One of the groups selected this year is the Cantonese music ensemble, TroVessional. They are taking part in the programme, “Fly me to Hong Kong”, which includes Cantonese music theatre, Naamyam workshops and a grand finale concert. They are here right now to tell us more about the music theatre production “Classics and Chill.”
