The Works：Social Design, a project between design students and the elderly, Japan posters design,

One group of students studying social design has been working with the older generation to reawaken a sense of creativity that may have long lain dormant. From social design to poster design. On show at the Hong Kong Design Institute, in collaboration with the Museum of Design Zurich, until the end of March, the exhibition “Japan Poster Artists - Cherry Blossom and Asceticism” showcases more than 200 posters. But despite those cherry blossoms in the title, don’t go to the exhibition expecting to see only the more sedate forms of Japanese art and design. Japanese poster design is often highly innovative and challenging. Highlights include works by design masters, Shigeo Fukuda, Kazumasa Nagai and Ikko Tanaka.
White Cube Hong Kong is currently featuring its first exhibition by two up-and-coming contemporary mainland Chinese artists Jiang Zhi and Shi Qing. , Both Jiang and Shi emerged from the experimental art scene in the mainland in the late-1990s. The exhibition is curated by independent Beijing-based curator, artist, and critic Bao Dong and is part of a project by the gallery showcasing the works of artists with whom it is not normally associated.
Cheung Yee was born in Guangzhou in 1936, graduated from the Fine Art Department of Taiwan Normal University in 1958, and has long lived and worked in Hong Kong. He has taught here, played a highly active – even pioneering - role in many local art movements and groups, and been much feted. To local art lovers his work is instantly recognisable: sculptures and cast paper works that show the influences of inspired by primitive African art, native American art, and ancient Chinese philosophies and traditions. AO Vertical Art Space is currently showing a selection of the paper-cast art works Cheung Yee has been creating since the 1970s, works that combine paper making and sculptural elements with calligraphy, ancient stories, legends and symbols, and the hexagrams of the “I Ching”. The exhibition, very suitably for beginning the Lunar New Year” is called “Fortune”.
