줄거리 : 어느날 아버지와 둘이 살던 콩쥐에게 새어머니와 팥쥐라는 동생이 생긴다. 새어머니와 팥쥐는 아버지가 집을 비울때마다 온갖 집안일은 다 시키고 그것도 모자라 팥쥐의 거짓말만 믿고 구박하며 때렸다. 그러던 중 콩쥐가 양반댁 도령과의 혼사말이 나오게되고, 새어머니는 팥쥐를 도령과 혼인 시키기 위해 사사건건 방해한다. 이 사실을 모르는 콩쥐는 산 속에서 우연히 도령을 마주치게 되고 두 사람은 서로 좋아하게 된다.
콩쥐 외삼촌댁에 잔치가 있던 날, 새어머니는 팥쥐와 먼저 가버리고 콩쥐에겐 사흘치 집안일을 다 마치고 오라한다.
아무리 채워도 구멍난 독에는 물이 차지 않았고 사흘이나 걸릴 집안일들을 금방 끝낼 재간이 없어 울고 있던 콩쥐 앞에 보살이 나타나 집안일을 끝내주고 새 옷과 꽃신을 준다. 감사한 마음으로 외가에 가던 중 신발 한 짝을 물에 빠뜨리고 때마침 과거에 급제해 사또로 부임하러 돌아오던 도령은 신발을 주워 그 주인을 수소문한다. 신발의 주인이 콩쥐임을 알게된 도령은 콩쥐와 혼례를 치르고, 팥쥐 모녀는 이를 배아파 하다 결국 콩쥐를 죽이고 무당의 힘으로 팥쥐가 콩쥐로 변해 콩쥐처럼 행세한다. 그 후 콩쥐가 죽은 연못의 연꽃을 눈엣가시로 여기던 팥쥐가 꽃을 잘라 하녀에게 버리라며 건네주고 하녀는 이를 버릴수 없어 방에 꽂아둔다. 그날밤 하녀의 방에 콩쥐가 나타나 자신의 억울한 사정을 이야기 하고 하녀는 도령에게 이 사실을 고한다. 도령이 연못에서 콩쥐의 시체를 발견하고 슬퍼하자 보살이 나타나 콩쥐를 살려준다. 도령은 콩쥐의 억울함을 풀어주기 위해 팥쥐 모녀에게 벌을 내리려 하지만 콩쥐는 용서해 줄 것을 청한다. 한편 자신들의 죄가 탈로날것이 두려워 도망가던 팥쥐 모녀는 벼락을 맞고 부러진 나무에 깔려 죽는다.
SYNOPSIS : Kongjui, who had been living alone with her father, welcomes a stepmother and a stepsister called Patchui into her life. When her father is out, the stepmother and Patchui make her do all the housework and the stepmother believes all of Patchui's lies and beats Kongjui mercilessly. When talks of marriage between Kongjui and the son of a respectable family come out one day, the stepmother does everything in her power to get Patchui married to the young man. Unaware of her stepmother's plans, Kongjui runs into the young man in the woods and the two fall in love. On the day of a party at Kongjui's uncle's house, the stepmother and Patchui leave first, leaving Kongjui to take care of all the housework before she returns home, which would take her three whole days. The pot that she has been told to fill with water has a hole and can never be filled while the work she must do cannot be done in a short time, so Kongjui starts crying. Suddenly, a Buddhist saint appears before her and does all the housework for her and gives her new clothes as well as shoes with flowers on them. Deeply grateful, she drops a shoe in the water on her way home. The young man who has returned as an official after having passed the national exam finds the shoe and starts looking for the owner. When he finds out that the Kongjui is the owner of the shoe, he marries her. Patchui and her mother are enraged and eventually kill Kongjui. They get help from a shaman to turn Patchui into Kongjui. Irritated with a lotus flower in the pond where Kongjui had died, Patchui tells a maid to get rid of it, but the maid keeps it in her room. That night, Kongjui appears before the maid and tells her what happened, who in turn tells the groom. The young man finds Kongjui's dead body in the pond and is mourning over her when the Buddhist saint appears before him and brings her back to life. The young man tries to punish Patchui and her mother to avenge Kongjui, but she asks him to forgive them. Meanwhile, Patchui and her mother who had run away for fear of being found out are crushed and killed by a branch that is struck by lightning.
