줄거리 : 봉수(김승호)는 순박한 농사꾼이다. 하지만 아무리 농사를 열심히 지어도 상황은 나아질 줄 모르고, 돈이 없어 딸 순이의 혼인까지 미루고 있다. 군대를 제대하고 마을로 돌아온 아들 영호(김진규)는 옥경(최은희)이와 사랑하는 사이이다. 옥경은 봉수의 집에서 자라서, 억조의 부인(황정순) 술집에서 장사를 돕고 있다.
가난에 지친 봉수는 사채꾼 억조(최남현)의 꾀임에 넘어가, 돈을 벌고자 소를 팔아 구제품 장사에 뛰어들지만, 서울에서 만난 사기꾼 일당(노경희, 전택이)에게 돈을 털리고 만다. 어느 밤 봉수는 억조가 옥경을 강간하려는 와중에 흘린 돈을 주워 가지려고 하다가, 억조와 싸움을 벌이게 되고 얼떨결에 그를 죽이고 만다. 옥경은 억조의 돈을 주워 일부를 영호에게 주고, 둘은 서울로 떠나려 한다. 하지만 억조 살해사건을 조사하는 경찰에게 붙들려 조사를 받고, 경찰들은 옥경과 영호가 살인범임을 확신하고 기차에 태워 본서로 압송한다. 봉수는 떠나는 기차를 쫓아가며 자신을 잡아가라고 외친다.

SYNOPSIS : Bong-su (Kim Seung-ho) is a nave farmer. Although he works as hard as possible, he never gets to be better off. He even postpones his daughter Sun-i's marriage. Young-ho (Kim Jin-gyu), a son who comes home from military service, is in love with Ok-gyeong (Choi Eun-hee). She has grown up at Bong-su's, and works at the bar of Eok-jo's wife (Hwang Jeong-sun). Poverty-stricken, Bong-su is cajoled by Eok-jo, an usurer, into selling cattle and starts a used goods business to make money. But he is deprived of his money by a swindler (Noh Gyeong-hee) and his group in Seoul. One night Bong-su picks up some money Eok-jo drops while he is trying to rape Ok-gyeong. While Bong-su fights with Eok-jo, he kills him by accident. Ok-gyeong picks up the money, and gives some to Young-ho. With that money Ok-gyeong and Young-ho are about to be off to Seoul, but are caught by the police who are investigating Eok-jo's murder case. Convinced that they are murderers, the police put them in custody and send them to the police station by train. Bong-su follows the departing train, crying out that he is the murderer and that it should be him who should be arrested.
