Quite a number of WU Guanzhong’s artworks feature rural townships of Jiangnan as they are originated from his affection for his hometown. WU Guanzhong was born in a rural village of Yixing, Jiangsu in 1919. Since he was little, scenes of everyday life in the rural townships of Jiangnan were imprinted on his mind. In addition, his admiration for LU Xun and his literature since childhood develops into a sense of kinship with Shaoxing, LU Xun’s hometown, driving him to sketch in Shaoxing repeatedly. That is why many of WU’s representative works are related to Shaoxing, for example: “The hometown of Lu Xun (III)”, “Former residence of Qiu Jin”, “Two swallows”, “Reminiscence of Jiangnan”, etc. In this episode, we will appreciate these significant works by WU Guanzhong and explore his background and also his affection for hometown.
