BMW Paint Shop with Artificial Intelligence: Automated Rework

BMW Plant Regensburg has become the first car plant worldwide to implement an end-to-end digitalized and automated process for inspecting, rework processing, and marking painted vehicle surfaces in standard production. With AI-controlled robots, each vehicle undergoes a unique process to meet objective quality standards, ensuring stable operations, shorter lead times, and consistent high-quality surface finish. The innovative process, called Automated Surface Processing, has been in series production since March 2022, making it the first car plant worldwide to use the AI-based process on this scale. The new method offers reliable detection of deviations, shorter lead times, and premium quality with stability and repeatability. All data collected is saved in the cloud, enabling optimal analysis of causalities and moving BMW Group towards its digital and intelligent connected factory, BMW iFACTORY.
