Timothy “Desert Storm” Bradley beat Jessie Vargas by unanimous decision Saturday night at the Stub Hub Center and the fight ended in controversy. The new WBO Welterwight Champion was clocked with an overhand right via Jessie Vargas with :17 seconds remaining in the 12th round of the fight. A wobbling and somehow NOT knocked out Bradley stood up until referee Pat Russell called the fight with :07 seconds remaining. While Vargas was celebrating, Russell acknowledged later that he “thought he heard the bell” as the fight was scored by the judges unanimously in favor of Bradley INSTEAD of a TKO to Vargas. A rookie mistake by a veteran referee and once again, boxing ends in controversy.
