Building Guardians：Beyond the Façade (1)

When there is an accident, such as concrete spalling, scaffolding collapsing and fire, people think of the Fire Services Department and the Police Force. In fact, the Buildings Department also provides 24-hour emergency services to the public in dealing with emergencies related to the safety of private buildings.
After receiving a report of damage to a tenement building, everybody thinks that it is just an ordinary concrete spalling case, but unexpectedly the whole building has collapsed. The Buildings Department staff rushed to the scene immediately after receiving the report and found that the situation was very serious. The original building has become a pile of rubble, and the outer walls of the adjacent buildings are also torn by the collapsed building, and the situation is at risk. At the scene, it is necessary to ensure that the ambulance personnel are carrying out the rescue work in a safe environment, and we must also search for evidence after the event and evacuate the residents. Every decision and every process are very crucial, especially near the end of the year. On the one hand, the Building Department staff must ensure that the building is safely demolished, on the other hand, they must also minimize the inconvenience caused to the nearby residents and let the affected residents return home as soon as possible. How can they think of the best way to serve both purposes with reason and compassion?
At the end, the authorities concerned decide to immediately arrange for a temporary office to handle the residents’ entry and exit, assist the residents to communicate with the police, make arrangement for the residents to return to their homes to take back their belongings, and build a 3-story steel frame for support, in order to prevent aggravation of the situation.
