Gary Payton was a nine time all-NBA defensive first team selection and earned the defensive player of the yaer award in 1996. He earned the nickname “the glove” for his pestering and intimidating defensive style of play, but recently shared via twitter that there was no way he could play in the NBA today. Payton said: “I could never play basketball in this soft era. All my contract money would go towards fines. Lol.” on Saturday. Payton played his best seasons in the 1990s, which became a major time of change for certain rules, including the elimination of the hand check rule, which changed how many backcourt players had to play defense.
