LeBron James is most likely going to opt out of his current contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers, but will not be leaving the Cavaliers. LeBron’s opt out clause is directly related to LeBron restructuring his contract for next season (2015-2016) and will most likely receive $1.5 million more dollars. When his back-to-back one year deals are up, King James will look to cash in as one of, if not the highest, paid player in history because of the NBA’s new TV deal worth $2.66 billion dollars.
“At some point after the value of the NBA's max contracts skyrockets (for a player in the league as long as James, they're worth 35 percent of the league's basketball related revenue, which will shoot up), he would probably be more interested in signing a longer-term contract. And a trade kicker for a max player can become active in the later years of longer-term contracts. It's a reason why James' agent, Rich Paul, might've asked for it last summer -- to create a grandfather effect for the trade kicker in future deals.”
Long story short - more NBA income, higher salary cap.
