Even for optimists, 2016 has been a year of extraordinary losses, farewells, change, violence and turbulence. In many places around the world, it has also been a year of surprises at the ballot box. Hong Kong’s elections might not have resulted in as dramatic a result as Brexit or the victory of Donald Trump, but the success of more anti-establishment and pro-democratic candidates in this year’s by-elections and elections, not forgetting the results of the Chief Executive election committee poll, showed that even here people are tired of politics as usual. Next week, we’ll be reviewing world events, but this week we asked political commentator Joseph Lian and former Chief Secretary Anson Chan to look back on what, to use a cliché, can be described as an interesting year for Hong Kong.
With 2016 almost done and dusted, let’s see what 2017 will produce – hopefully that will not turn out be more of the same. But for now, from all of us at The Pulse, we wish you a happy, healthy, and safe 2017. See you in the New Year. Goodbye.
