Some of the work of photographer and artist Vik Muniz is garbage, and he’d be the first to admit it. But we’re featuring it anyway, as he uses sugar, thread, chocolate syrup and even garbage to create his art. His ”Pictures of Garbage” series was featured in the documentary film, “Waste Land”, which focused on a project in which art met trash and changed the lives of some of the catadores, or garbage pickers, of Brazil.
Among the most loved characters in movies are the animated ones: from Dreamworks’ “Kung Fu Panda” to Walt Disney’s “Mickey Mouse”. Usually the representation of such characters, and particularly the reselling of images of them, are tightly controlled by copyright. Schim Schimmel though has been given permission to use them for his paintings that he says are dedicated to encouraging us to appreciate the world around us. He was in Hong Kong recently to open his first exhibition here.
Japanese artist, Yumi Masuda was born in Fukushima. After an earthquake and tsunami devastated her hometown and led to a nuclear crisis in 2011, she returned for a visit. To her surprise, nature had bounced back. Her garden was overgrown with wild plants and flowers that filled her with a feeling of positive energy. And that power of transformation and energy is celebrated in her first solo exhibition in Hong Kong, “The Transient Diary” which is currently on show at the Art Projects Gallery.
It’s known as the mouth harp, the Jew's harp, the jaw harp, the Ozark harp, and even the juice harp, but whatever you call it, it’s origins lie more than 5,000 years in the past and its been played in many cultures. Local musician Chor Lai became interested in the instrument after seeing a Ukrainain singing contest on YouTube. Today he’s conducting workshops to promote the ancient instrument.
