在第二集，節目會探討中世紀城堡在十一至十六世紀期間的軍事功能。當兵臨城下，城堡要抵禦攻城槌、投石機和從地下坑道而來的攻擊，守城者亦因而要不斷想出新對策──一直到大口徑火炮出現，城堡的神話最終破滅。
縱使現時大部份城堡都只剩頹垣敗瓦，但是當我們看到在郊區，矗立在一隅的遺跡時，他們仍然會喚起我們對那個時代的記憶。我們會遊走歐洲，探索倫敦的白塔，以至位於諾曼第，由獅心王理查設計的革命性堡壘──加亞爾城堡，還有一些神聖羅馬帝國皇帝用以囚禁人質的監獄。歷史學家和考古學家更會引領我們，探索令人著迷的中世紀戰爭情景。

Our documentary examines their military function from the 11th to the 16th century. When the enemy was at their gates, they had to withstand battering rams, catapults and sapping which called for ever new solutions by their defenders until, finally, large-calibre cannons spelt their end.
Even if most of them are mere ruins, they still evoke the era when they dominated the surrounding countryside. Our journey takes us all through Europe, from the White Tower in London to Richard the Lionheart’s revolutionary Chateau Gaillard in Normandy as well as to the seat of imprisonment as a hostage of the emperor, while historians and archaeologists will guide us through a fascinating panorama of medieval warfare.
