In the 1980s the 956 with its aluminum monocoque chassis, ground effect, and air-cooled 2.6 liter turbocharged engine paved the way for Porsche to achieve new racing records. The highlight was in 1983 when the Porsche 956 took the first 8 places at the 24 hours of Le Mans.
