The railroad is an important milestone which denotes the advancement of civilisation. It revolutionises a region’s development as well as people’s way of life. The first truly operational railway in China ran from Shanghai.

In this episode, we will depart from Shanghai and travel along the Shanghai-Kunming High-Speed Railway to Jiangxi Province, where we will visit Sanqingshan UNESCO Global Geopark, admire the Danxia landforms of Guifeng (Turtle Peak), and enjoy a performance of, as well as attempt, Yiyang style singing, an intangible cultural heritage. We will then head to Guizhou Province to learn ancient papermaking techniques, stop by Xijiang Miao Village, and also marvel at the views of Shilin (Stone Forest). Lastly, we will take part in the Torch Festival of the Yi people.

With its eastern terminus in Shanghai, the Shanghai-Kunming High-Speed Railway passes through provincial capitals such as Hangzhou, Nanchang, Changsha, and Guiyang to reach its western terminus in Kunming, Yunnan Province. Spanning 2,266 km, it is currently the longest east-west running high-speed railway passing through the greatest number of provinces in China.
