Viswanathan Anand, 'The Tiger from Madras' India, victorious as the Inaugural 2017 King Salman World Open and Women’s Rapid Chess Championships reach halfway point. The women’s championship wasn’t short of exciting moments. Chinese grandmaster Ju Wenjun absolutely dominated the women's tournament from start to finish, winning the gold medal as the only player to finish with a win rate of nearly 80%.

In an effort to become a sporting hub and a beacon of change, Saudi Arabia welcomed players from 55 countries, among them 10 men and 11 women of world’s top players. The tournament has laid the foundation to be a memorable championship, with all competitors in a race to prove their strategic prowess, against some of the highest IQs in the world.

His Excellency Turki bin Abdulmohsen Al-Sheikh, President of The General Sports Authority hopes to promote chess in Saudi Arabia and encourage citizens across the Kingdom to become more involved in the sport. The Authority recently transformed the Saudi Chess Committee into a structured sports union to efficiently implement its activities across the Kingdom and to develop and nurture the talents of its players.
