Manchester United played without star striker Robin Van Persie but came out of the gate ready for the best team in Europe. Bayern Munich retained much of the possession but it was United who provided the deadlier scoring chances. Nemanja Vidic scored in the second to give the Old Trafford faithful something to cheer for, a surprise to say the least. Then just moments later Bayern Munich equalized with Mandzukic feeding Bastian Schweinsteiger. However, near the end of the match, Schweinsteiger would pick up a pivotal red card, ruling him, along with Javi Martinez, out of the second leg at the Allianz Arena.
