As expected, the beginning of the new term of the Legislative Council on Wednesday was what’s politely described as turbulent. The first meeting began with the 70 lawmakers taking their oaths. Three were rejected. Four other localists and seven pan-democratic legislators also either shouted slogans or made extra statements before or after taking their oaths. And that was only the beginning. With us in the studio is former Secretary for the Civil Service, Joseph Wong to talk about these issues.
Earlier in the show, we looked at how legislators took their oaths. Some held umbrellas, some held banners bearing messages asserting Hong Kong’s independence, Gandhi was quoted, some lines were delivered in slow-motion, and other statements sounded suspiciously like swear words. It’s a lively start to what’s likely to be a contentious four years. 26 of the 70 Legco members are new faces. We’ve been speaking to three of them.
On Thursday, the King of Thailand, Bhumibol Adulyadej died at the age of 88. He was head of state for 70 years, the world’s longest-reigning monarch. The country is shrouded in grief, a one-year mourning period has been declared. We’ll leave you with images of the life of King Bhumibol and see you next week. Goodbye.
