The Pulse：Interview with two former Legco Presidents, Tsang Yok-shing & Andrew Wong on chaos at Legc

This week, in the midst of decidedly tempestuous weather, we’re devoting most of the show to the rather longer running “sturm und drang”, or “storm and stress” at the Legislative Council. We are entering an unprecedented period with two members of the executive, branch, Leung Chun-ying and Rimsky Yuen, trying to use the courts to stop popularly elected legislators being sworn in as Legco members, and with a pro-Beijing Legco president finding himself an accidental champion of pro-democrats as he stresses his responsibility to act in the interest of the council’s members and their voters. Later on, I’ll be talking to two former Legco presidents, Jasper Tsang Yok-shing and Andrew Wong.
Before the break, we heard from Tsang Yok-shing, who was president of the Legislative Council from 2008 until this year. With me now is Andrew Wong, himself a long-time legislator, and the final president of Legco under the British administration.
Well, former Legco presidents may be breathing a sigh of relief that they no longer have to deal pesky legislators but they are not the only law makers to have left. Among the pro-democrats, neither Lee Cheuk-yan nor Gary Fan were re-elected, but both of them are however determined to continue playing their part in politics.
On Thursday morning Hong Kong time, Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump faced off in the third and final U.S. presidential election debate, this one coming from Las Vegas. As at the last debate or was it a clash, there were no opening handshakes. This time, the key takeaway from Mr Trump is that he won’t decide whether the election has been rigged until after the results are in. It’s a fair bet that he won’t have complaints if he is elected, unlike his bitter recriminations when his reality show failed to win an Emmy. We’ll leave you with images of the debate.
