Rubbish, garbage, trash, waste. No, we’re not talking about recent events in Legco but the 9,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste Hong Kong produces every day, meaning that everyone who lives here is, on average, responsible for 1.36 kilogrammes. Up to 99% of local solid waste that is recycled is then exported for further processing overseas.
The problem is even worse than usual this year as torrential rainstorms have led to Hong Kong’s beaches being inundated with marine waste from the mainland.
