On Wednesday, Financial Secretary John Tsang came out to bat for the eighth time, and he had plenty of resources at his disposal. Dipping into a HK$63.8 billion surplus he handed out a package of one-off relief measures costing 34 billion dollars. There were the usual criticisms, but there was also praise for his apparently more understanding attitude towards Hong Kong’s young people in comparison to Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying. Saying that “our younger generations in particular, are hungering for spiritual contentment,” he went on to say “This is what a mature society should manifest.” With us in the studio are Edward Yiu from the Department of Geography and Resource Management at Chinese University and Li Kiu Wai from the Department of Economics and Finance at City University.
Financial Secretary mixed a measure of understanding for the dissatisfaction of Hong Kong’s young people with a pronounced toeing of the government line regarding claims of economic damage caused by Occupy Central. Even though figures now available show that the economy registered no more than a blip in lowered growth.
Meanwhile the budget strove to give the younger generation something to look forward to, as seen in plans to help start-ups and boost support for our creative industries. More than a billion Hong Kong dollars has been set aside for this, including a definite boost for the “dedicated followers of fashion.”
