Large-scale musical and performing art events require large-scale venues, and in Hong Kong they don’t come much bigger than the annual three day Clockenflap music and arts festival. This year’s Clockenflap, now in its ninth year, ran from the 27th to the 29th November. In that nine years the festival’s gone from strength to strength, even though finding a suitable location was a problem at first. The first two Clockenflaps were held at Cyberport, the third – much reduced in size - in a warehouse.
It’s been able to expand massively since 2011, when it first moved to the West Kowloon Cultural District. This year, West Kowloon was out. There’s construction going on. So Clockenflap found a new home, on the Central harbour front.
As major international events like Clockenflap show, Hong Kong has come a long way as far as world class shows and concerts are concerned. At the harbour front alone we’ve also had temporary venues set up for circuses, horse shows and – perhaps a bit less cultural - motorbike stunts. Internationally-renowned orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic perform in our concert halls. And of course the Hong Kong Coliseum, originally built for sports activities, is pretty much booked year round for pop concerts. But many of these performance venues were built almost three decades ago, and with increasing demand and a growing appetite for large-scale cultural activities, organisers and promoters and local art groups have long had a problem in finding the right venue for their events.
