In Chinese culture, the Tiger is said to symbolise dignity, courage, sternness, protection, and safekeeping. To celebrate this year of the big cat in music, we’ve invited some of the most celebrated “cats” in Hong Kong’s jazz scene to the studio.

When it comes to jazz piano, Ted Lo is one of the coolest cats. After graduating from Berklee in 1976, he worked with a number of notable musicians in the United States for two-decades. In 1996, he returned to Hong Kong. Since then, he has been actively promoting, and educating people here in, the art of jazz. He’s with us right now with singer Sherine Wong, who we last talked to in June about an album idea she was working on and which has now been released.

Like Ted Lo, jazz pianist Joyce Cheung is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music. As well as playing piano, she’s also an arranger and composer. She has collaborated with many Hong Kong musicians not only on jazz but also on classical music and Cantopop, arranging music for groups ranging from quartets to a 100-piece orchestra. With her own ensemble, Joyce likes to experiment and reinvent classical pieces. She’s here with members of that ensemble to preview for the first time a project that’s been ten years in the making.
