Dancer Jin Xing is one of China’s most acclaimed modern dancers and choreographers. She’s also an actress, a chat show host, and founder of her own dance company. But for Jin, who was performing in Hong Kong last month, it’s been a life that – to an outsider at least – has involved confronting or reconciling many contradictions: the military and art, Western and Chinese culture, and even two genders. The annual Arts in the Park community arts event in Victoria Park celebrated its 12th year. This year it included giant puppets, illuminated artworks, fun carnival art stalls, the Mad Science Hunt and 16 hours of non-stop performances. And it all culminated in the Arts in the Park Mardi Gras Parade, this year with the theme of science, time travel, astronomy, wildlife and robotics. One of the artists who took part in the parade is puppet maker, Paul Chan. He has been creating giant puppets for the carnival for the past six years, and says “Sesame Street” was a major inspiration. And, in our studio, music from a composer and solo pianist who is one of the world’s bestselling contemporary musicians and whose music spans both classical and mainstream audiences.
