DC Comics created Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Justice League of America. Marvel brought comic book fans Iron Man, Spider Man, Captain America, Thor, the X-Men, the Guardians of the Galaxy. There’s been a long rivalry between the two publishers, and the rivalry, much to the joy of some and the irritation of others, has continued into the movies. The comics have been adapted into TV and movies for decades, but now filmmakers are finding that technologies like improved 3D techniques, and computer generated imagery, CGI, open up greater opportunities to create new and amazing worlds. Those are perhaps nowhere more useful than in creating the mystic realms visited by sorcerer supreme Doctor Strange.
To some, Doctor Strange, isn’t in the first league of comic book heroes. Others, dazzled by the psychedelic graphic style of his original creator Steve Ditko and his collaborators, consider him one of the best. Now, he’s been brought to the big screen with all the resources of contemporary cinema, in an origin movie that tells the story of how egotistic brain surgeon Stephen Vincent Strange suffers crippling hand damage that sets him on the path to protecting the world from magical and mystical threats. Recently, director Scott Derrickson, producer Kevin Feige, actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Tilda Swinton were here to promote the film.
