Today, in a week that’s been particularly significant for Taiwanese politics, we’re dedicating the whole show to a series of documentaries about eminent authors, mostly from Taiwan. We first featured the documentary film series “The Inspired Island” in The Works in 2011. It featured six authors and writers who were from, or based in, Taiwan. Even then, the producers and the film company were discussing a second series that might also include writers from Hong Kong.
Now it’s here, and – as promised - among the seven writers featured, three are Hong Kong writers.
In part one of this week’s show, writer Kenneth Pai Hsien-yung talked about the importance of using and preserving the more complex traditional Chinese characters.
The two authors we’re featuring next also speak of the role poetry and literature have to play in preserving culture and history.
