In today's show, an original soundscape and rare images of American Indians taken by ethnologist and photographer, Edward S. Curtis, take us to the old Wild West. And from the not so old and Wild West, the instrumental band Balmorhea from Austin, Texas will be in our studio with their beautiful post-rock and folk crossover sound.
Painter and calligrapher, Yeh Shih Chiang died three years ago at the age of 86. He was originally from Guangdong, but spend most of his life living and working in Taiwan. He’s considered a modern master, but throughout his life his work tended to be shown in small venues. The exhibition, “Illuminated Presence” not only provides the first large retrospective of his works in Hong Kong, but also complements them with interpretive works from photography-based artist Yeh Wei Li.
Engineer Charles Kao received a joint Nobel Prize for Physics for his pioneering work in fibre optics. Around a decade ago he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. To help him cope with the disabling condition, his wife encouraged him to turn to art therapy. The touring exhibition “From Scientific Discovery to Artistic Creativity” includes art work he has created over the past two years and aims to provide people with a better understanding of how art can bring colour and creativity to the lives of Alzheimer’s patients and their carers.
For more than 20 years, starting in 1907, American ethnologist and photographer Edward S. Curtis captured the fast disappearing lifestyle of the North American Indian. His masterwork called, appropriately enough, “The North American Indian” consists of 20 volumes of narrative text and large format photographic images of their lives. At the Empty Gallery, in the darkness of the exhibition “The Man Who Sleeps on His Breath” you can see large scale projections of 24 images from that series, accompanied by a soundscape by Valerio Tricoli.
Formed in 2006 in Austin, Texas, Balmorhea [pronounced bal-mə-ray], started as a duo and then developed into a six-piece ensemble. The original duo, Rob Lowe and Michael Muller, are currently on a tour of Asia, and they are in our studio right now
