Across the harbour from Art Basel Hong Kong, for the past two years the Peninsula Hotel has also been inviting artists to exercise their inspiration on its façade. Last year, it was the venue for Tracy Emin’s projected art.This year, thanks to British sculptor Richard Wilson, passers-by may feel a little uneasy as they look up.
Inevitably, during Art Basel Hong Kong, local galleries and organisations put their best foot – or feet - forward. This year, coinciding with the event, Pearl Lam Galleries opened a second space in Sai Yin Pun to complement their main gallery in Central. The new space is particularly dedicated to promoting emerging artists. The subject of the first exhibition at the new gallery is Beijing-based artist and bee keeper, Ren Ri. Yes, you did hear that right: beekeeper. And his bees are active collaborators.
Last week, on Tuesday 24th March, Hong Kong lost an artisan whose contribution to its musical world has been, even if behind the scenes, invaluable. For the last half century, Mr Hui Kwang-yin, widely and appropriately known as Master Hui, has tuned pianos in local concert halls, theatres, and studios, for both local and international performers. He also regularly kept the pianos in RTHK, including our own, always at their best. We will miss his skill, his passion, his professionalism and his kindness.
