Not far from the mouth of the Saint Lawrence River near the little town of Rimouski, Canada, lies the wreck of the ocean liner Empress of Ireland, a majestic transatlantic vessel commissioned to ply the sea route between Quebec and Liverpool. Its disappearance on May 29, 1914 was one of the most deadly shipwrecks in history after the Titanic. What unexpected event cost the lives of 1,012 of its passengers?
