日軍佔領菲律賓兩年後，麥克阿瑟將軍實踐承諾，領軍重踏菲國領土，收復失地。美軍在馬尼拉灣和科隆灣組織空襲，後者更成為整個修收復行動的轉捩點，十多艘補給船、貨輪同油輪幾乎全數遭美軍擊沉，推進了稍後的雷伊泰島登陸，最終導致日軍投降。
