바다는 대기중의 이산화탄소를 흡수하는 성질이 있다. 이산화탄소의 1/3 정도가 바다로 흘러간다.
그런데 대기중에 탄소가 너무 많이 쌓이면 바다도 그만큼 과도한 양의 이상화탄소를 흡수하게 되고
또 과도한 탄산이 발생하게 되면서 바다가 산성화 된다. 이산화탄소가 물에 녹으면 탄산과 함께 수소이온을 방출 수소이온이 많아지면서 해양 pH지수가 낮아진다. 이 현상을 바로 '바다 산성화'(Ocean acidification)라고 한다.
