The Works：Chinese New Year Special

Kung Hei Fat Choy. And welcome, to this special bilingual Lunar New Year edition of The Works. We’re going to get the year off to a healthy and nimble start by celebrating some of the great musicians and performances we’ve had in our studio over the past twelve months. Regular viewers will have seen some of them before, but we’re also including two performances we haven’t previously broadcast. Coming up, an unusual instrumental combination, as ukulele player Corey Fujimoto and flautist Zhang Zhiyong play us Pachelbel’s “Canon in D”. And we also have an a cappella group that combines voice and beatboxing in their classical and pop repertoire, and that just might leave you “Gobsmacked”! But first, we will bring you a performance you won’t have seen before. A few months ago folk singer and songwriter Ara Kimbo, a descendant of Taiwan’s Pinuyumayan and Payuan tribes, visited our studio and recorded this extra piece, a song that he says he often sings at the Lunar New year.
Italian Stefano Bollani takes pride in performing music that crosses boundaries, ranging from classical, to smooth and avant-garde jazz, Brazilian jazz, and pop rock. He brought us a new interpretation to an old classic. Also bringing us a new interpretation of a much-loved song is Turkish pianist Ayşedeniz Gökçin. In December we featured her playing a piece by the American Band Nirvana. She also recorded for us this previously unshown version of this Pink Floyd song. To wind up this week, and give you all our best wishes for the upcoming year, a here’s a special piece from our three presenters.
