The Works Christmas Special:
Christmas comes to Hong Kong’s streets. Yarn bombing, also dubbed yarn graffiti, started in Texas in the United States in 2005 when Magda Sayeg decided to decorate the door handle of her boutique with knitted yarn. The trend took off here a couple of years ago and since then you may have seen railings, lamp posts, road signs or trees on the streets of Sheung Wan, Causeway or Mong Kok cosily and colourfully wrapped.
In Russia, some are going to have to wait a little longer to open their Christmas presents. Many Russians celebrate Christmas Day on January 7th, which corresponds to Christ’s birthday, December 25th, in the Julian Calendar still used by the Russian Orthodox Church. For the religious, on Christmas Eve, there are several long church services, after which families return home for a traditional “Holy Dinner”, traditionally consisting of 12 dishes representing the 12 Apostles. Well we’re not going to ask you to delay your Christmas, but we are going to transport you to Russia, or more specifically a place called Tsarskoye Selo. At the Hong Kong Museum of History until March you can get a glimpse of Tsarist Russia from the 18th to 20th century.
Last week the Bel Canto Singers invited people to “A Barock Christmas” concert last week, injecting new energy into carols, hymns and other popular Christmas songs. If you missed their show, don’t worry. Today they’re with us in the studio with a Christmas medley: The First Noel, O Come, All Ye Faithful and Jingle Bell Rock. Finally, to round off this special Christmas edition, how better to celebrate the multi cultural nature of Hong Kong than with “Last Call”, a local five-piece band that fuses Latin, pop, jazz and hip-hop music. Here they are with “Let It Snow”, bossa nova style.
From all of us at The Works, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy holiday.
