there probably isn’t a street corner or a landscape in Hong Kong that hasn’t found itself the subject of at least one photographer’s lens. Hong Kong people can also provide plenty of inspiration for photographers. But those people are getting increasingly divided, politically and economically. That’s encouraged some photographers, like Dick Chan, to spend at least some of their time focusing on social issues.
Even if we rarely move from our computer keyboards, we are all navigators in one way or another, even if we only find our way around the world via the internet and social media. At the Puerta Roja gallery until this Saturday, works by a group of eight Spanish and Latin American artists are exploring what “NAVIgation” may mean in the contemporary sense and in a globalised world. Artist Jovial Leung’s training in glass art, metal-smithing and antique restoration enables her to bring together elements of glass and mixed media in her sculptures and installation pieces. For her first solo exhibition at Mur Nomade gallery, Jovial works with fire and glass, placing fine glass pins on canvas to draw attention to elements of the natural world and of her personal life that may be In Peril.
Deer are two musicians from Mexico: Adriana Martinez and Miguel Bastida. Two years ago they decided it was time to make music together in Hong Kong. They include among their influences not only American and British pop, but also jazz, trip-hop and Latin music. They’re here talking to Ben Pelletier.
