Hong Kong Stories – Detour to Happiness
Episode 6
A Small Good Thing
“I think happiness is inevitable, and it depends on how you perceive it and how you feel it. There may be some trivial things, such as your lover pouring you a glass of water for you to drink slowly, which is actually a happy thing to enjoy.”
After graduating from university, LI Yan worked in the human resource management field in the commercial world. In 2009, she came across bereavement: her boyfriend Andrew who had been in love with her for 20 years suddenly passed away, and her mother died of illness nine months later. LI couldn’t accept the departure of Andrew, and so she sealed up all the things he left behind. Later, she came out of her sorrow and found a way to continue Andrew's life. She used a portion of his insurance compensation to set up a charity, to provide grief counseling services for bereaved people and promote life education.
Andrew’s death gave LI a valuable lesson in life education and became her motivation. She used her spare time to organise different activities to teach people about life and death. Many years after Andrew's death, she finally let go of her attachment to the things Andrew left behind. She decided to move away from the old residence with her father, and dispose most of the things Andrew left behind. When she was packing Andrew’s things, LI suddenly realised that she had already experienced the happiness that she had been pursuing long ago.
