The research and development of a new technology or product always requires copious resources. To protect their products, developers usually apply for patent protection. However, many new technologies are developed from existing ones or re-innovations thereof. Therefore, when applying for a patent, the applicant must specify the innovative features and the scope of protection. Nevertheless, if the claim is too broad, approval might not be granted, while too narrow a scope might result in insufficient protection. Much of the system developed by this episode’s case study is based on existing fundamental technologies. However, they have integrated and modified them for application in garment recycling. Their successful application for patent protection ultimately enabled them to explore more overseas partnership opportunities with peace of mind.
