For days in a row, anti-extradition protestors have called for city-wide strikes. Roads were blocked, shopping centres were vandalised and the toll booths at the Cross-Harbour Tunnel were set on fire. The protestors also occupied university campuses and fought the police with bows and arrows among other weapons. Meanwhile, after storming into the Chinese University of Hong Kong and clashing violently with the protestors earlier, the police have further escalated the use of force. They besieged the Polytechnic University, and citizens were prohibited from entering the campus. As the protestors tried several times to break the police’s siege, the two sides engaged in fierce fighting.

The police’s use of armoured vehicles, stun grenades and a long range acoustic device to crack down on protestors aroused controversies. Apart from the protestors, other students, social workers, medics and healthcare professionals were also trapped inside the university. They were all arrested on suspicion of rioting. Were the arrests legitimate at all? The police have been using forceful measures to stamp out violence. Can social order be effectively restored?
