2019年是五四運動100周年，國家主席習近平最近發表紀念講話，強調愛國主義，並要求青年「聽黨話、跟黨走」。內地歷史學者章立凡認為，北京將五四運動包裝成愛國運動，實際上是閹割了五四精神，而當年青年追求的民主與科學，至今只有科學受到當權者重視，甚至被用作反民主。

內地「新公民運動」發起人許志永，一直在內地爭取民主，曾經被當局指他聚眾擾亂公共場所秩序，而被拘捕入獄。他如何評價內地的民主發展？

Year 2019 marks the centenary of the May Fourth Movement. In a recent memorial speech, Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasised patriotism and asked young people to “listen to the party and follow the party’s footsteps”. Mainland history scholar Zhang Lifan believes that in presenting the May Fourth Movement as a patriotic movement, Beijing has in fact deprived the May Fourth spirit of its essence. While young people at the time advocated democracy and science, only science is valued by those in power today – it is even used to counteract democracy.

Xu Zhiyong, the founder of New Civic Movement in Mainland China, has been fighting for democracy in the mainland. He was arrested and detained for gathering a crowd to disrupt public order. What does he think about the development of democracy in China?
