Internationally, along with Zhang Xiaogang, Wang Guangyi, and Yue Mingjun, Fang Lijun is one of the four best known Chinese contemporary artists. Part of the "Cynical Realism" group in the early 1990s, he first became known for his "bald headed" characters, examining ideas of morality and questioning so-called normality. In his solo exhibition at Hanart Gallery until the 12th January, Fang showed new watercolours, ink paintings and ceramics, most of them created here in Hong Kong where he now has a studio.
Cinematographer Chris Doyle took a variety of jobs before, in 1983, filming "That Day, On the Beach", the feature debut of director Edward Yang. His work there earned him the Best Cinematography Award in the 1983 Asia-Pacific Film Festival. Since then, Chis has worked with Chinese directors such as Zhang Yimou, Zhang Yuan and Wong Kar-wai, as well as international directors like Gus Van Sant and Jum Jarmusch. He has directed his own feature film, "Away with Words" and a segment of the movie "Paris, je t'aime". And he has turned his hand to other art, as you can see in an installation at the Agnes B librairie gallery in Hollywood Road.
