Ai Weiwei may be more than a thousand miles away from Hong Kong and not allowed to leave mainland China, but that does not stop him from staying active and connected. The exhibition "Frame" is the first that Ai Weiwei has curated in Hong Kong. The exhibition's on show at Duddell's, a restaurant and bar combined with a two-floor art salon.
The commemoration of the life and work of writer Yasi, otherwise known as Leung Ping-kwan continues. We've previously shown you the musicians, performers, and writers celebrating his life. There are also two ongoing exhibitions: the "Journeys of Leung Ping Kwan" exhibition at the Central Library and "Yasi * We Friend - A Cross-Media Response Exhibition to Leung Ping Kwan" at the Hong Kong Fringe club.
It's been a long time in the making, but the buildings and establishments that are to make up the West Kowloon Cutural District are coming closer to reality. M+ is due to be finished by 2017. Currently under way at ArtisTree is 'Building M+: The Museum and Architecture Collection', the museum's first architecture exhibition. It focuses not just on the design for the future M+ building but also presents the first public showcase of the museum's growing architecture collection.
Japanese artist Izumi Kato, whose work is currently on show at the Galerie Perrotin, is even more hands-on than most. In his paintings, he uses rubber spatulas to apply big areas of colour, but on the more detailed parts of his work he applies the paint with his hands while wearing vinyl gloves. It gives his work a somewhat primitive feel, a little like the African masks that painters like Picasso loved so much. Some even look a little like aliens. But for Kato, the art making process is more about trying to capture the instinctive and intuitive.
