There are unlimited themes in the world of comics. Sam TSE and Pen SO, two local comic artists, are not only good friends, but they also choose “Hong Kong in disaster” as the theme of their comics by coincidence to illustrate their unconventional imagination of Hong Kong.
Based on his setting where Hong Kong is facing a zombie apocalypse, Sam TSE has created comics including “BodieZ” (2015) and “Hong Kong Infected” (2016). His comics turn our familiar Hong Kong into a brutal and bloody war zone, which terrify his readers. On the other hand, Pen SO named his creation “Hong Kong Havoc” (2016)”, which illustrated Hong Kong after a catastrophic tsunami. The protagonist wanders in a city of rubble, encounters various troubles and struggles for survival.
Sam TSE was a staple-bound comic book assistant when he joined the comic industry. He had experienced the ups and downs of the industry, but he did not give up comics. He eventually became a lead artist after joining the industry for around 10 years and managed to create his unique style of horror comics. For Pen SO, he is a skilful observer of the city. Different characters are frozen in static scenes and his feelings towards the city are integrated in his drawings. Furthermore, his unique book design breaks through the usual unilateral 2-dimensional narrative style of comics, making his story seems to extend to the real world and brings a whole new reading experience to his readers.
In the programme, apart from sharing the process of creating comics and looking forward to the future of the industry, the two comic artists also draw the future Hong Kong in their eyes. Over the past year, Hong Kong people experienced unprecedented ridiculous situations. Today, they probably have deeper feelings rereading the comics by the two artists.
Animation and comic writer LAW Man-lok will host this episode and bring our audiences to the unusual creative world of Sam TSE and Pen SO.
