Anyone saying “There are nothing more than martial arts and muscles in Hong Kong comics” certainly does not know that there is also this comic artist KAM Siu-man (KAM) in Hong Kong.
KAM grew up in Kwun Tong spending his time at the grocery store run by his parents, with observing the passers-by as his everyday entertainment. When he was small, he once found 10 dollars unattended on the street, and he spent the money on snacks, toys and the first comic book he ever bought. Since then, KAM has been deeply in love with comics, and even becomes a comic artist later.
Saying that he is greatly inspired by comics like “Cowboy” and “Old Master Q”, KAM started walking on the path of hilarious comics soon after he entered the industry. Since the 1980’s, he has been publishing numerous bizarre comedic works, in which people will talk about them in delight and keep recalling the parody and caricature, and people even consider him the originator of the “Mo Lei Tau” (nonsensical) culture. KAM considers artistic creation “making something out of nothing”, but he does not think this is his strength. In fact he considers himself best at “making associations in thinking”. The characters he has created may appear ugly while the jokes in his works may sound vulgar, but he is actually a book lover. Being a person that is particular about words, KAM’s favourite authors are GU Long and HUANG Ying, because he appreciates the artistic concepts developed in their works.
The blaze at the mini-storage at Kowloon Bay in 2016 destroyed the manuscripts KAM kept all these years. He still has a hard feeling for the lost as he loves his works as his life. He has a deep feeling that to a certain extent, this blaze has taken away some of Hong Kong’s humour. After creating numerous 4-panel comics, KAM thinks that every day in life is “the first panel”, and he has never thought about his “forth panel”. He considers art works should surprise people, and so is life. There should be an unexpected ending for both. KAM considers himself a pessimistic person, yet he is the one who keeps bringing us joy, what will be the future of Hong Kong in his eyes?
The host of this episode is Dr. FAN Wing-chung (Teacher Siu-mo), a veteran fan of Hong Kong comics. Apart from visiting KAM’s studio to explore the source of his sense of humour, Dr. FAN will also be interviewing a few fans of KAM, including football commentator Keyman MA, sandpainting artist CHOY Kam-chiu and the owner of a theme restaurant of Hong Kong comics Eric. These gentlemen will be sharing with us their thoughts on KAM Siu-man, and telling us the influence this master in Hong Kong comics on them.
Host: Dr. FAN Wing-chung (senior lecturer of the Hong Kong Baptist University)
